Smart Things to Do With Your Spare Change

Are you one of those that keeps your spare change? Maybe you throw it in a mason jar or empty coffee tin. Or, keep it in a piggy bank? This is a great idea! Your spare change can add up big and it’s a great idea to get in the habit of saving your spare change. You can put that change to good use. Here are 8 smart things to do with your spare change.

Start a Vacation Savings

Vacations are a great rest, away from reality. Relax, kick back, recharge. They are really great. I am a full proponent of taking vacation (at least one a year). What better idea than use your spare change to fuel your vacation costs?

Get excited by starting to plan. Go to Kayak and start searching. Head over to AirBNB (here’s $40 off your stay) so you can live like a local while enjoying vacay life.

Pay Off Your Debt at an Accelerated Pace

Pay off debt faster. Plain and simple. That change adds up. Throwing it aside can easily add up to $20 or $50, or more. Apply that to your debt to help you save on interest and pay it off quicker.

Invest it in Real Estate

You too can be a real estate investor. You don’t need thousands of dollars to do it. Fundrise is making it super accessible for people regular people like you and me to invest in real estate.

  • 8.8 to 12.4% in returns
  • Diversify your portfolio with real estate
  • Maximize your earnings
  • Low fees

You really can’t go wrong. Learn more about Fundrise so you can start growing your money.

Grow Your Emergency Fund

You should have 6 to 12 months of income stashed aside in your savings account for a rainy day. I did this and guess what? One day I needed it. I was so happy that I had that money to fall back on. It made life a little less stressful. If you don’t have one already, start a savings account!

Start a Side Hustle

Invest that spare change into a business for yourself. You can use this business to make more money and possibly replace your 9 to 5 (I did it!). What business can you start? Think about your passions. What would you love to do? Who problem can you solve?

What did I choose?

First, it was ecommerce. I opened a Shopify store and sold $30K of goods every month.

Then, it was blogging. I started a blog (this is blog #13) and have made a lot of money blogging, selling digital products, freelancing, and selling my websites.

If you’re interested in blogging, check out this free step-by-step guide to get started.

Save Up for a Big Purchase

Reward yourself? Why not, right? Accumulate your change to save for an upcoming big purchase like a new computer, a TV, etc.

When it’s time for you to buy, check out cashback sites and apps like Dosh or TopCashBack. You register for free, access your online store through the app, then shop the store as normal. Once you’re done, instant cashback to you!  It’s the easiest ever.

Throw it to a College Savings Account

Saving for your child’s education? Use that extra money to invest in a college savings account.  No kids yet or kids are grown and college isn’t in the picture.

You can still use your spare change to put toward education. Try the tons of courses available in Udemy’s course marketplace. They are self-paced and you can learn anything from computer programming, to french cooking, to building websites, and more. They are really fun. You’ll love it!

Spend it on yourself

No need to save up for a big purchase. You can treat yourself to something small, like a date night, family night of bowling, tickets to an amusement park, etc.  How awesome would this be? Using your spare change to fuel your fun activities.

Wrap Up

And there you go friends, 8 nifty things you can do with your spare change. I hope this encourages you to stash away that spare change you come across daily. It can really add up. You can even grab a coin counter like this one, which tells you how much change you are accumulating. Super neat. Do you have ideas to share? Comment below so we can hear from you!
